Welcome to a new week friends. Today on Medic-Monday we would
be discussing epilepsy.
Over the weekend, a friend of mine was involved in a car
accident. Apparently, the driver of the bus directly behind his car had an
epileptic fit while driving and rammed his bus into my friend’s car. Thankfully,
no permanent damage was done but this scenario highlights the need for all to
be more aware of epilepsy.
Epilepsy, the fourth most common neurological disorder means
the same thing as "seizure disorders" and affects people of all ages.
It is characterized by unpredictable seizures and can cause other health
problems. A person is diagnosed with epilepsy if they have one or more seizures
that were not caused by some known and reversible medical condition like
alcohol withdrawal or extremely low blood sugar.
It's a problem with your brain’s electrical system. A surge
of electrical impulses cause brief changes in movement, behavior, feeling, or
awareness. These seizures last from a few seconds to a few minutes. People
who've had two or more seizures without obvious triggers at least 24 hours
apart have epilepsy.
Causes of Epilepsy
Some of the main causes of epilepsy include:
1.
Low
oxygen during birth
2.
Head
injuries that occur during birth or from accidents during youth or adulthood
3.
Brain
tumors
4.
Genetic
conditions that result in brain injury, such as tuberous sclerosis
5.
Infections
such as meningitis or encephalitis
6.
Stroke
or any other type of damage to the brain
7.
Abnormal
levels of substances such as sodium or blood sugar
Epilepsy Treatment
The majority of epileptic seizures are controlled by
medication, particularly anticonvulsant drugs. The type of treatment prescribed
will depend on several factors, including the frequency and severity of the
seizures and the person's age, overall health, and medical history. An accurate
diagnosis of the type of epilepsy is also critical to choosing the best
treatment. Please consult your medical doctor for treatment.
As you can see, please epilepsy is not a spiritual punishment
but a disorder with the nervous system and as such, people who exhibit epilepsy
should not be ostracized but be properly taken care of.
If you are prone to having epilepsy, please DO NOT DRIVE OR
OPERATE ANY MACHINERY WITHOUT THE NEEDED SUPERVISION.
